St. Lucia's Day in Chicago - Brady

December 13 was St. Lucia's Day, so Kevin and I decided to head to Ebenezer Lutheran Church up in Andersonville to see a real-live celebration.

It’s really a beautiful story and tradition. Legend has it that St. Lucia (martyred because she wanted to devote her life to God and the poor instead of marrying some dude) was seen crossing a lake in a white gown wearing a wreath of lights on the darkest day of the year (according to the old-timey calendar they used) up in Scandanavia. She saved the people from famine and brought hope that winter would end and the light would come back. So today the oldest girl in every family gets up early on December 13th, puts on her special St. Lucia outfit, and serves coffee and buns to her family.

None of our pictures turned out great, but below is Chicago’s very own 2010 St. Lucia (oh yes, we have an official St. Lucia here) and then my sisters and me all dressed up as kids.

A bad cold that gives me an excuse to lay around all weekend?
