Day 1 - We went to the Ferry Building, tried Blue Bottle coffee, and ate at the farmers market there. Some of Kevin's good friends from high school met us out west for that first weekend. We took an "eco cruise" through the bay and under the Golden Gate Bridge. Then we checked into the apartment we had rented for the week. (A pretty Victorian place near Japantown.) We had dinner at a place called ThaiHouse Express, drinks at Toronado, and a tamale from the Tamale Lady (just what she sounds like - a roaming lady who sells tamales at bars).
Day 2 - We went to Sonoma and Healdsburg for wine tasting. That took basically all day and was so much fun. We had burritos for dinner at a place called Papalote. I think this was the night I first tried Bi-rite ice cream, too. (Best ice cream I've ever had.)
Day 3 - We kind of wandered around the city. We went for a run through Crissy Field to the Golden Gate Bridge and back. Checked out Ghirardelli Square, walked around Chinatown and North Beach. Went to City Lights Bookstore and the bar Vesuvio. Ate dinner at a fancy Mexican placed called El Nopalito.
Day 4 - Kevin and I were by ourselves - his friends had all gone home - and we went hiking in Muir Woods. There was a cute tavern out there called The Pelican Inn where we had lunch. In the afternoon I had some work to do, but then we gave ourselves like 3 hours to wander to dinner up through the fancy stores on Fillmore Street. We shopped a little and actually stopped for pre-dinner dessert at Citizen Cake. We ate at Greens - a really great vegetarian restaurant. After that we went to Buena Vista for Irish coffees and took a very wet cable car ride home. (It rained the first 4-5 days we were there.)
Day 5 - Kev and I took a loooooong run through Golden Gate Park, went home and cleaned up, and then wandered around the city again. We spent most of our time in The Haight (the old hippie neighborhood). We saw the Full House homes that day...walked through Buena Vista Park...That night some friends of ours who live out there took us to The Cheeseboard in Berkeley - a really good pizza place - and gave us a short campus tour.
Day 6 - Kevin's birthday! We jogged the Land's End Trail and saw the Sutro Baths. Went home, picked up Kevin's friend Kristin who came to visit for the second half of the trip, and went to Brenda's for brunch - great Southern-style food. Spent the afternoon checking out two other neighborhoods - The Castro and The Mission, and had a fancy prix fixe vegetarian meal at Millennium. Kevin's parents joined us for that dinner and the rest of the weekend.
Day 7 - Biked the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, hung out there and had lunch, took the ferry back to San Fran. Ate at ANOTHER amazing restaurant - Blue Plate - and at Bi-rite again.
Day 8 - Golden Gate Park with Kristin and Kevin's parents. We did the Japanese Tea Garden and AIDS Memorial Grove. And then back to the Ferry Building for some Mexican food before we caught a 5:30 flight.
So it was pretty packed! And pretty awesome! I'll definitely be heading back to that beautiful city.
